Writing On The Highway:
Freelancing from an RV
When I first hit the road in my RV, I wasn’t sure how the freelance life would mesh with the full-time RV lifestyle. I knew I wanted freedom, space to write, and new horizons to inspire me. What I didn’t know was how often the two—writing and traveling—would clash, collide, and ultimately make each other better.
Waking Up Somewhere New
There’s something about pulling back the curtains and seeing a new landscape each morning that stirs my imagination. Sometimes it’s the red cliffs of New Mexico, other times the quiet pine forests of Colorado, or even a Walmart parking lot when the road demanded a late stop. No matter the view, the road gives me fresh perspective—and that bleeds into my writing.
On good days, I’ll wake early, brew a strong cup of coffee on my little stovetop, and settle into a writing rhythm while the campground is still quiet. By noon, I’ve knocked out an article draft, answered emails, and can shut the laptop guilt-free to go explore a canyon trail or a quirky small-town diner.
The Not-So-Pretty Side
But let’s be honest—it’s not all Instagram-worthy sunsets. RV life has its headaches, and freelancing from the road adds another layer. I’ve had deadlines hanging over my head when the campground Wi-Fi cut out, or when I had to climb a hill with my phone raised like a torch just to send an article to an editor.
And then there are days when the balance feels impossible—when the RV needs repairs, or I’m juggling too many client projects, and I wonder if I’d be better off back in a quiet office with reliable internet and fewer moving parts. But then I remember: I chose this life. And the trade-offs are worth it.
Finding My Groove
Over time, I’ve learned a rhythm. I write best in the mornings, so I protect those hours like gold. Afternoons are for driving, exploring, or handling the inevitable little crises that come with living in a rolling house. Evenings often end around a fire pit, notebook in hand, scribbling down ideas sparked by the day.
I’ve also learned to diversify my income streams—some steady editing clients, some travel writing, and the occasional passion project. Having multiple irons in the fire makes the unpredictable nature of both freelancing and RV living feel less daunting.
Why I Keep Going
What keeps me out here? Freedom. Inspiration. The thrill of the open road. I may still stress about deadlines, invoices, and internet signals, but I also get to write with the Rockies outside my window, or park in the desert where the stars blanket the sky.
Freelance writing pays the bills, but RV life pays the soul. Together, they’ve given me a life I couldn’t have imagined when I was stuck behind a desk. Out here, the world is my office—and every mile adds a new chapter to the story I’m writing, both on the page and in my life.

The RV life is the one for me and my husband, too. He is getting burnt out on driving after crossing the country multiple times. You could travel in the United States forever and still it see all of its beauty. ❤️
